The Phoenix Quartet, based on the distinctive instrumentation of Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, is dedicated to continuing that masterpiece’s legacy of vibrancy, radiance, and music that speaks for itself. This bi-national, NYC-based ensemble was formed in 2014 in the Contemporary Performance Program at the Manhattan School of Music.
Its members, all active participants in the NYC and Canadian new music scenes, are thrilled to present the first installment of their Messiaen+ project, entitled The End of Time, Deconstructed. Composers were invited to write musical responses to Messiaen’s original, and the new commissions will be presented this spring in four uniquely-crafted concert programs at venues around the city.
The group strives to facilitate an audience’s personal connection with the music. Like their namesake, the mythical phoenix, the quartet creates anew the wonder and power of each piece of music in every performance, and communicates that spark of life to their listeners.
